Will Starfield ever come to PS5? |
Starfield entered Early Access on August 31, with the official worldwide release on September 6, 2023. Bethesda's previous
Games, including the Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series, were released on PlayStation consoles. This led many to wonder if "Starfield" could be Bethesda's first Xbox exclusive or if it would eventually come to PlayStation.
Starfield is now available in Early Access for those who have purchased the Premium or Constellation Editions, or opted for Xbox or PC Game Pass. premium upgrade. The long-awaited official release date for the space ARPG is September 6, 2023 for Xbox and PC. Despite being exclusive to Microsoft devices, some Sony fans are still wondering if it will ever come to PlayStation 5.
Starfield's Xbox exclusive was announced at E3 2021, which drew some backlash from PlayStation players since Bethesda titles like Skyrim and Fallout 4 were cross-platform releases. Pete Hines, senior vice president of marketing and marketing at Bethesda Communications, apologized and said he understood fans' frustration as he also plays on that console but the developer is focused on making games like Starfield for Xbox
have to focus on future.
Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media marks the release of PS5.
. Microsoft's $7.5 billion acquisition of Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, was a key reason for Starfield's exclusivity, making it highly unlikely that the game will ever come to PlayStation. During a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) hearing (via TheVerge), it was revealed that a big part of the reason Microsoft bought the studio was actually Xbox CEO Phil Spencer's concerns that Sony wanted the studio. Bethesda's space epic was exclusive to the PlayStation
console and omitting the Xbox console. This would be in line with other ZeniMax titles like Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, which were limited-time exclusives.
Given that the acquisition should allow Xbox to protect content so it remains commercially viable, it's no surprise that a big new IP like Starfield would remain exclusive to Xbox and PC. Other destiny entries from Bethesda's different franchises, like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, will likely comply with in shape within the destiny. However, in the case of The Elder Scrolls 6, Spencer refused to confirm this during his testimony, stating that it was "difficult to pinpoint". Which platforms the game will be released on, considering the distance to the game's release.
Expect More Xbox Exclusives in the Future
PlayStation has already been praised for its library of exclusive franchises like God of War, Horizon, Uncharted, The Last of Us and Marvel's Spider-Man, and many cite this as a reason to buy a PlayStation. 4 instead of Xbox One. Xbox did have some last-gen exclusives, with ongoing franchises like Halo releasing new versions, but most third-party Xbox exclusives like Rise of the Tomb Raider were eventually made time exclusive and released shortly on PlayStation.
.
That's why exclusive products like Starfield are a great advantage for Microsoft. It seems that the company will have a much larger catalog of exclusive content in the future after acquiring Activision Blizzard King and the aforementioned ZeniMax Media. Although Sony and Microsoft agreed to keep Activision's Call of Duty series on PlayStation following an investigation, it appeared it would come at a higher cost. More titles from the studio, including future titles from long-running franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Diablo and Tony
Hawk, are unlikely to make their way to PlayStation. Given that Starfield was received positively by many upon release, that seems to validate Spencer's decision to acquire such a large library of exclusive content. While that bodes well for the future of Xbox, it's disappointing that PlayStation users are missing out on Bethesda's first major new franchise in 25 years.
