Nintendo has been serving up a hearty dose of Mario-related content lately, and the reason behind this Italian-American feast isn't just because of the approaching Feast of San Gennaro. Shortly after its April release, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" skyrocketed to become the highest-grossing film of the year, only to be dethroned by Barbie. Nevertheless, it continues to hold a comfortable second place with over $1.3 billion in global earnings, as reported by Box Office Mojo. It seems evident that Nintendo had a keen eye on this success and aimed to capitalize on Mario's enduring popularity in the modern era by showering us with an array of Mario and Mario-related games for the upcoming year.

Additionally, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" introduced Mario to a new generation of fans, particularly young children whose gaming skills will eventually develop to allow them to wield a Nintendo Switch. Consequently, a fresh wave of Mario enthusiasts is on the lookout for more Mario games right now, and Nintendo is poised to deliver. If there was ever a Mario drought before, it has undoubtedly been quenched.

The recent Nintendo Direct event on September 14 showcased seven different Mario-themed games, ranging from classics like the remake of “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” to a new title called “Princess Peach: Showtime!” Where players assume control of Peach and her various transformations, each with unique abilities. Not to mention "Super Mario Wonder," a side-scrolling adventure set to launch in October, which even boasts its own Mario-themed Nintendo Switch OLED console.

Here is a rundown of the Mario games announced and featured during the latest Nintendo Direct:

"Super Mario RPG": A remake of the 1996 SNES RPG, complete with stunning new graphics and added features.
"Mario Vs. Donkey Kong": A revisitation of the Game Boy Advance puzzle-platformer, where Mario must rescue stolen windup toys from Donkey Kong.
"Princess Peach: Showtime!": A fresh Peach-centric game that empowers her to transform into various versions of herself, each with distinct abilities.
"Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door": A remake of the beloved GameCube RPG, blending 2D visuals with 3D animation for a mind-bending gameplay experience.
“Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD”: A remastered edition of the 3DS sequel, originally titled “Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.”
"Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass Wave 6": The final DLC for "Mario Kart 8," featuring new characters like Pauline and Peachette.
"WarioWare Move It!": A collection of Wario-themed mini-games that challenge players to use their Joy-Cons to complete a variety of zany tasks.
Nintendo has consistently kept Mario at the forefront of its gaming offerings, as the iconic Italian-American plumber is synonymous with the company and its consoles. Last year brought us two new Mario games, "Mario Strikers: Battle League" and "Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope," while the year before that saw the release of four titles, including "Super Mario 3D World," bundled with "Bowser's Fury," "Mario Party Superstars," and "Mario Golf: Super Rush." Although these were impressive releases, some were sports or party games with a Mario twist, and "Super Mario 3D World" was a remake with additional content.

Looking ahead to 2023 and 2024, Nintendo's lineup appears more diverse and robust than ever before. From iconic platformers like "Mario Vs. Donkey Kong" to RPG adventures in "Paper Mario" and "Super Mario RPG," and even a fresh take on 2D Mario gaming with "Super Mario Wonder," there's something for every Mario fan.

Nintendo seems to be carefully curating its Mario game releases, offering a mix of beloved classics for older fans and new games to fill gaps in the franchise. Notably, there hasn't been a Peach-led game in two decades, and the last one was criticized for its outdated portrayal of Peach.

The emergence of a Peach-led game might not have happened anytime soon without the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” This film reimagined Peach as a capable hero who guides a bumbling Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom. It's uncertain if Nintendo would have ventured into a protagonist Peach game without the resounding success of the movie, especially considering the ongoing issues with Peach's character depiction in the upcoming "Paper Mario" remake.

Regardless of your personal preferences, it's evident that Nintendo is going all-in on Mario and the gang in the coming year. Which of these upcoming Mario games are you most excited about?
