A seasoned developer from the Cyberpunk 2077 team has expressed strong reservations regarding comparisons drawn between their game and Bethesda's upcoming Starfield project. Patrick K. Mills, a senior figure in the Cyberpunk 2077 development team, addressed a tweet that highlighted similarities in gameplay mechanics between the two titles. The tweet showcased aspects such as underwater swimming, grenade explosions, and NPC reactions when weapons are aimed at them in both games.
Mills, however, did not endorse this comparative approach and instead labeled it as "false criticism" while deeming it "detrimental" to the way players perceive and engage with video games. He openly expressed his displeasure with such comparisons.
In a subsequent tweet, the Cyberpunk 2077 developer highlighted that the video lacked any form of commentary or in-depth analysis. It merely presented isolated clips without meaningful context, essentially pitting Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 against each other without a thoughtful examination of their respective merits.
This sentiment of discouraging game comparisons has been echoed by developers from other studios recently. For instance, the team behind Baldur's Gate 3, including game director Swen Vincke, have actively resisted the notion that their highly acclaimed RPG should serve as a benchmark for other titles in the industry. They argue against using their game as a tool to criticize other works, as highlighted in a PC Gamer interview.
As for Cyberpunk 2077 itself, the game's expansion titled "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty" is scheduled for release later this month on September 26. Additionally, an extensive update known as "2.0" is in the works, promising significant overhauls to various core aspects of the game. It's shaping up to be a substantial month for CD Projekt and their action-RPG.
