Making the decision to buy a video game console has always been difficult, and it still is today. Admittedly, when it comes to actual hardware, there's very little choice between the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series, and while the Switch is a little underperforming, it's also less than half the price and allows gaming on the go. Therefore, most of them do not make their choice based on the consoles themselves, but based on the games that can be played on them.
When it comes to the best open-world gaming console, there are many things to consider, such as the potential lifespan of the console and the quality of the games that will be released on it in the months and years to come. For many, however, the here and now is more important, which can make choosing the best console for open-world gaming a bit easier.

The Switch might be a bit weaker than the competition when it comes to raw processing power, but that doesn't mean it can't keep up when it comes to open-world gaming. In fact, Nintendo's hybrid console has two of the best open-world games of all time, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, and they're not the only great open-world games on the Switch.
Switch players can also enjoy games like The Witcher 3, No Man's Sky and Skyrim, albeit at lower resolutions than their PS5 and Xbox series counterparts. Unfortunately, there are some pretty big gaps in the Switch library when it comes to cross-platform, open-world games, and with rumors suggesting a Switch successor might be introduced soon, a few might also additionally sense the console is a volatile investment.

Bethesda is answerable for a number of the first-class and largest open-global franchises of all time, which bodes nicely for those already invested within the Xbox ecosystem. Starfield will likely be the first of many big open-world games Bethesda is developing exclusively for Xbox, and many expect the next big Fallout and Elder Scrolls games to follow suit when they finally come out.
Thanks to the power of the system, Xbox Series owners can also enjoy the best cross-platform open-world franchises, including Far Cry, Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Aside from Starfield, however, the Xbox series doesn't really have many big exclusives to offer at the time of writing, making it more likely for the future than the here and now.
PS5:
Many of the quality PlayStation exclusives are open-global games, making the PS5 a first rate preference for fanatics of the genre. Games like Marvel's Spiderman Remastered, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon Forbidden West are all worth checking out, and their sequels are confirmed or in development, which bodes well for the future of the console. One of the biggest concerns for potential PS5 owners is Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda in 2021, which will almost certainly make some, if not all, of the studio's future open-world games exclusive to Xbox. So the greats of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout might think twice before buying a PlayStation 5, but with the odds that neither Fallout 5 nor The Elder Scrolls 6 will be out any time soon, that could pose a problem for the next one console generation. .
Verdict: PlayStation 5 is the best open-world gaming console in 2023
Aside from Starfield, the Xbox Series has few Xbox-exclusive open-world games to offer, and while that could change in the future, it's exactly unclear when that change will happen. It could be two years, but it could also be five or six years before the console generation comes to an end. The PlayStation 5, on the other hand, is already home to many of the best games in the open world, and has many more big PS5 releases planned for the coming months and
years.
For those on a tighter budget, the Switch is worth considering, although there are some significant limitations to be aware of. First, the limited performance of the system can cause significant performance issues in some open-world switch games, while many graphics-intensive cross-platform open-world games bypass the system entirely. The Switch, too, could be obsolete in the next few years depending on when Nintendo decides to release the next console. It's worth noting that almost all Xbox exclusives are now available on PC on release day, and PlayStation exclusives usually make their way to PC a few years after they first appeared on consoles. Obviously, a high-end PC gaming costs a lot more than a PS5 or Xbox series, and console ports often outnumber PC ports because the former are so much easier to tweak. While buying a PC might be a good option for some open-world video game fans, it might not be ideal for everyone.
