Mortal Kombat 1 is set to hit the gaming scene next week, promising fans of the long-running, fatality-packed fighting series a thrilling dose of ultraviolence. This latest installment introduces exciting new features, including a tag-team mechanic that enables players to pair their main character with a backup “Kameo” fighter. On top of that, there's an all-new epic storyline, regular seasonal updates with fresh Invasion mode missions, and more exciting content to look forward to.

While Mortal Kombat 1 brings a host of innovative elements to the table, it also pays homage to its roots by retaining certain old-school aspects rarely found in today's video games. One such element is the inclusion of unlockable characters. While the core game features only one unlockable fighter (learn how to unlock Havik here), there are five unlockable Kameo fighters: classic versions of Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Kung Lao, as well as Shujinko and Motaro. Considering there are only 15 Kameo fighters in total, unlocking these additional characters is a significant achievement. So, how can you add these Kameo fighters to your roster? Keep reading for the answer.

Unlocking the additional Kameo fighters is tied to leveling up your Mortal Kombat 1 profile. There are multiple ways to gain experience points (XP) and level up in Mortal Kombat 1. Specifically, we're referring to the level displayed on your profile card in the upper-left corner of the title screen. So, how do you increase your level? It's quite simple – just play the game! Whether you engage in Mortal Kombat 1's single-player modes or take your skills online, you'll accumulate XP and boost your level. The additional Kameo fighters become accessible at regular intervals based on their positions on the character select screen – Scorpion unlocks at level 5, Sub-Zero at level 10, and so on.

There you have it! By staying committed to the game, you'll have a complete Kameo roster in no time. Now, go unleash some havoc with Motaro!

Mortal Kombat 1 is slated for release on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Switch on September 9. However, those who have purchased premium editions of the game will have the opportunity to play it a bit earlier, starting on September 14.
