The release of the highly-anticipated survival horror game, “Alone in the Dark,” a reboot of the classic Infogrames/Atari title featuring Jodie Comer and David Harbour, has encountered a delay. Originally slated for release on October 25, 2023, publisher THQ Nordic has decided to push the launch date to January 16, 2024.

According to THQ Nordic, the decision to delay the game was not due to technical issues but rather a strategic move. They aimed to avoid competing with other major game releases scheduled for October, specifically citing the forthcoming launch of "Alan Wake 2," "Cities: Skylines 2," and the PS5 exclusive "Spider-Man 2." This trio of titles, along with a plethora of other significant releases such as "The Lamplighters League," "Assassin's Creed: Mirage," "Forza Motorsport," "Lords of the Fallen," "Endless Dungeon," "Ghostrunner 2," and “Total War: Pharaoh,” made October 2023 an exceptionally busy month for the gaming industry.

While some may consider delaying the game until 2024 an extensive postponement solely to avoid October, it becomes clear that November marks the beginning of the holiday season, introducing even fiercer competition. In essence, 2023 presents a challenging landscape for game developers seeking a quieter launch window.

During this extended development period, THQ Nordic and developer Pieces Interactive intend to meticulously refine “Alone in the Dark” to ensure it lives up to the expectations of eager players. Importantly, "Alan Wake 2," which was initially cited as the reason for the delay of "Alone in the Dark," also faced a brief postponement due to the crowded October release schedule. Its launch was shifted from October 17 to October 27, allowing it to dodge the most crowded period of the month.

It's worth noting that "Alone in the Dark" will be available on PC via Steam, where the original release date of October 25 is still listed to avoid any confusion. Additionally, players can get a taste of the game through “Alone in the Dark Prologue,” a free-to-play “playable teaser” where 11-year-old Grace Saunders embarks on a brief but memorable journey through a section of Derceto Manor , also available on Steam.
