Phoenix Labs, the renowned gaming company, has recently announced that its CEO and co-founder, Jesse Houston, and COO, Jeanne-Marie Owens, will be stepping down from their positions. This news was reported by GamesIndustry.biz.
Jesse Houston will continue to contribute to the company as an active member of the Vancouver studio's board of directors. Additionally, he will take on an advisory role, providing valuable insights and guidance to the team.
Jeanne-Marie Owens, on the other hand, will transition into an advisory role at the end of 2023. Ian Johnson, the current Vice President of product development, will succeed her as the new COO.
Jesse Houston expressed his gratitude and optimism for the future, stating, “After nearly a decade, I feel like I can step back from the day-to-day operations at Phoenix Labs. The future has never looked brighter – we've got an "Amazing pipeline of games in development and our incredible Fae Farm [just launched] for the Nintendo Switch and PC. I couldn't be prouder of everything that the team has achieved together."
It is worth noting that Sean Bender and Robin Mayne, fellow co-founders of Phoenix Labs, had already departed from the company earlier this year. Personal reasons were cited as the cause for their departure, according to a spokesperson for Phoenix Labs.
In recent developments, Phoenix Labs' management successfully secured the buyback of the studio from its parent company, Garena, which acquired the Dauntless developer in 2020. This move marks a significant milestone for the company.
Furthermore, Phoenix Labs expanded its operations in 2020 by establishing new offices in Montreal and Los Angeles. However, the company did face a round of layoffs in May, as announced earlier.
Despite the challenges, Phoenix Labs' latest release, Fae Farm, has received positive reception and made a strong debut in the Top Ten on the UK boxed charts after its launch on Friday. This achievement highlights the continued success and potential of the company.
