| Pikmin 4 Maintains Top Position, Fending Off Armored Core 6 in Japan Monthly Charts |
Pikmin 4 has continued its dominance in the Japanese gaming market, securing the top spot in retail sales for the second consecutive month. Despite facing competition from the only new entry in the Top 30, FromSoftware's Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, Pikmin 4 remained unrivaled.
The latest figures from Famitsu reveal that Nintendo's endearing garden critter adventure managed to sell an impressive 235,000 copies during August. This achievement propelled the game's total lifetime sales to an impressive 753,000 units.
Remarkably, Pikmin 4 has shattered the franchise's previous record for physical sales, previously held by Pikmin 3 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch, which sold 660,000 copies over its entire lifespan. Pikmin 4 accomplished this feat in just two short months.
In contrast, Armored Core 6 had to settle for the second spot on the charts. It faced a late-month release on August 25, just two days before Famitsu's data collection cutoff for the month. Although it performed admirably with 163,000 copies sold, it failed to surpass its predecessor, Armored Core 5, which sold 194,000 copies in a similar late-month launch back in 2012. It's worth noting, however, that these numbers only account for physical sales, And considering the substantial growth of the digital market over the past decade, it's highly likely that FromSoftware's latest release sold more copies overall.
In other chart developments, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe climbed from the fifth position to secure the third spot, thanks to an uptick in sales. The game managed to sell 57,000 copies in August, pushing its total sales in Japan to nearly 5.5 million units. It's important to note that these figures exclude digital sales.
Overall, the Japanese gaming market witnessed a decrease in boxed game sales, with only 1.25 million units sold in August, marking a 27% decline from the previous month's 1.7 million units. Hardware sales also dipped, experiencing a 20% decline, totaling 530,000 units.
The Nintendo Switch remained the top-selling console, moving 334,000 units across its three models, with 258,000 units belonging to the OLED version. However, Nintendo's console saw an 18% drop in sales compared to the previous month.
The PlayStation 5 sold 181,000 units, reflecting a 25% decline in sales compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, Xbox experienced a noteworthy increase, doubling the combined sales of both Series models compared to the previous month, though this still amounted to just over 10,000 units.
