| Mortal Kombat 1 introduces a new origin story for Hanzo Hazashi, the original Scorpion character |
Mortal Kombat 1 may have altered Scorpion's identity, transitioning him from Hanzo Hasashi to Kuai Liang, but it hasn't entirely erased the original character. In fact, it has provided him with a fresh and intriguing backstory.
Ever since the initial reveal trailer, Mortal Kombat 1 has generated significant buzz surrounding Scorpion's identity. Fans speculated whether he was no longer Hanzo Hasashi in this iteration, unlike in the rest of the series, and was, in fact, Kuai Liang, the second Sub-Zero. Eventually, this speculation was confirmed by the game's story director.
The switch in Scorpion's identity prompted a mixed response from Mortal Kombat enthusiasts. Many worried that it might erase Hanzo Hasashi from this timeline entirely. Fortunately, that's not the case. While Hanzo doesn't appear in the game's story mode, he does make an appearance elsewhere in Mortal Kombat 1. If you want to experience Mortal Kombat 1 with fresh eyes, consider this your spoiler warning for one of the game's Tower endings.
As in previous Mortal Kombat games, completing a Tower mode run with any of the playable characters rewards you with a unique ending. What sets Mortal Kombat 1 apart is that these endings seem to be integrated into the main story, rather than being the wild and unrelated endings we've seen in the past.
Among these endings, Smoke's stands out as the most captivating. Smoke embarks on a quest to establish the Shirai Ryu alongside Scorpion but struggles to find worthy members. His fortunes change when he encounters a young boy, initially mistaken for an assassin but revealed to be a frightened warrior trying to earn a living.
Smoke takes the boy under his wing and introduces him to Kuai Liang, who sees potential in his "fire." In case it's not clear yet, this young boy is none other than Hanzo Hasashi, poised to become Kuai Liang's apprentice in this timeline and a significant figure in the Shirai Ryu.
This represents a significant departure for the character, who has typically been depicted as roughly the same age as Kuai Liang's older brother, Bi-Han. However, it's an intriguing twist that maintains ties to the Shirai Ryu's origins while avoiding a rehash of previous Mortal Kombat game narratives. Moreover, for fans longing for the classic Hanzo Hasashi, he appears to play a crucial role in an upcoming Invasion season.
