Introducing the New Pavo 2x Anamorphic Lenses for Super35 by DZOFilm - Available Now!

DZOFilm, the renowned cinema lens manufacturer, unveiled its highly-anticipated Pavo 2x Anamorphic Prime Series earlier this year during NAB 2023. Building on the buzz surrounding these lenses, DZOFilm has recently shared more comprehensive information about them, including pricing and availability, at the IBC 2023 event held in Amsterdam.

The Pavo 2x prime lenses from DZOFilm are a set of six distinct focal lengths, each boasting a commendable T2.1 aperture. The sole exception is the 100mm lens, which offers a T2.4 aperture. This lens series spans 28mm, 32mm, 40mm, 55mm, 75mm, and 100mm focal lengths. Specifically designed to cater to Super35 image sensors, these lenses are available in both EF and PL mount versions. Notably, the Pavo series offers two intriguing variants: one featuring a mesmerizing blue streak anamorphic flare and the other showcasing an enchanting gold streak.

For those seeking individual lenses, they can be acquired for $5,500 each. However, DZOFilm also offers the option of purchasing sets of three lenses at a bundled price of $16,000. These sets are thoughtfully composed, with one including the 28mm, 40mm, and 75mm lenses, while the other trio comprises the 32mm, 55mm, and 100mm lenses.

What truly distinguishes the Pavo lenses is their remarkable 2x anamorphic compression factor. This distinctive feature essentially doubles the amount of horizontal information captured when compared to traditional spherical lenses. To illustrate, when a 2x anamorphic image is de-squeezed during post-processing, it yields an expansive 3.55:1 aspect ratio, or approximately 32:9, within a 16:9 frame.

All six lenses share a uniform front diameter of 95mm, simplifying the process of swapping them out without necessitating adjustments to other filming accessories such as gimbals and drones. Nevertheless, it's worth noting that these lenses exhibit slight variations in weight, ranging from 1.2 to 1.6 kilograms. They offer an identical 270-degree focus throw, yet their aperture throws range from 58 to 79 degrees.

One of the standout features of each Pavo lens is its impressive close-focusing capability for anamorphic lenses. The focus distance from the sensor plane spans from 0.4 meters for the 28mm lens to 0.95 meters for the 100mm prime. DZOFilm emphasizes that this lens set is an invaluable tool for filmmakers aiming to infuse depth and nuance into their storytelling endeavors.

The world of anamorphic lenses has witnessed significant developments this year. At the outset of the year, Venus Optics introduced the Laowa Proteus 2x anamorphic lenses designed for Super35 cameras. These lenses can be purchased individually for $5,000 each or as a two-lens set priced at $9,500. The Laowa Proteus 2x series encompasses an impressive range of focal lengths, including 20mm, 28mm, 35mm, 45mm, 60mm, 85mm, 100mm, and 135mm. While the 20mm, 28mm, 100mm, and 135mm versions are expected to arrive later this year, the other four focal lengths are currently available for order.

Additionally, Venus Optics recently announced an exciting collaboration with rental house Keslow Camera, introducing a special "Flex" variant of the Proteus 2x series. This unique offering allows users to seamlessly swap the flare color to suit their creative preferences on the fly.
