Broken Pixel Watches: Without Official Repair Program and Parts, they Become E-Waste

Google Acknowledges Limitations: Unable to Repair Pixel Watches, Recommends Replacement |
Google has been touting its partnership with iFixit and the availability of replacement parts for its products as a significant step towards sustainability and customer satisfaction. However, one notable exception to this repair-friendly ethos appears to be the Pixel Watch. Even after 11 months since its launch, Google has not established a repair plan for this product.
Reports emerged of Pixel Watch users encountering cracked glass and seeking solutions, but finding none. The Verge investigated this issue and received confirmation from Google that there are currently no repair options available for the Pixel Watch. In response to inquiries, a Google spokesperson stated, “At this moment, we don't have any repair option for the Google Pixel Watch. If your watch is damaged, you can contact the Google Pixel Watch Customer Support Team to check your replacement options "
Cracked displays and similar damages are not covered under any warranty, leaving consumers with the sole official option of purchasing a new device. Moreover, due to the absence of a steady supply of replacement parts, the unofficial repair industry remains powerless, making it practically impossible to repair a Pixel Watch without sacrificing another one. While this repair model may be viable for highly popular devices with an abundance of salvageable units, the scarcity of Pixel Watches on the market hinders the availability of spare parts. This is unfortunate, considering that iFixit's repair analysis revealed that the Pixel Watch is relatively easy to disassemble and repair, particularly if replacement screens were readily accessible.
The Pixel Watch is particularly in need of repair options because a significant portion of its design features a large glass hemisphere on the top half. Consequently, it is susceptible to damage from accidental impacts, potentially leading to the watch shattering. Some may view this situation as conflicting with Google's commitment to repairability, as highlighted in its 2022 announcement. However, it's important to note that this repair program primarily targets Pixel phones and does not extend to other Google products. As the release of the Pixel Watch 2 approaches, it remains to be seen whether Google will introduce repair solutions for this product.
