| Revamped FCC Satellite Application Process Set to Boost SpaceX and Amazon's Satellite Internet Ventures |
In a recent development, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has introduced a more efficient satellite application process, a move set to significantly benefit companies like SpaceX and Amazon as they venture into the realm of home internet services via satellite technology.
The FCC has deemed these new regulations necessary to accommodate the burgeoning demands of today's commercial space sector. Furthermore, the commission aims to expedite the evaluation and approval of numerous requests from companies such as Amazon and SpaceX, who are actively pursuing the establishment of global satellite networks to provide high-speed internet access.
In an official statement issued to Cord Cutters News, the FCC outlined the key aspects of these new rules: "The new rules take concrete steps to expedite the initial processing of applications for authority to operate space and earth stations under part 25 of the Commission’s rules. Today’s Report and Order establishes timeframes for placing space and earth station applications on notice for public comment, permits applicants to apply for authority to operate in frequencies in bands where there is not already an international allocation for the satellite services to be provided, provides flexibility for non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) licensees to have more than one unbuilt system without facing potential dismissal of their applications, and streamlines processing of earth station operators’ requests to add space stations as points of communication."
Furthermore, the FCC intends to actively engage with the public for feedback on additional improvements to enhance the satellite application process.
To expedite the approval of satellite applications, the agency has established its Space Bureau, increased its workforce dedicated to satellite applications, introduced new avenues for competition in satellite broadband services, and modernized its spectrum policies to align with the evolving needs of the Space Age's next generation.
This development coincides with Amazon's preparations to launch its home internet service. Amazon plans to deploy thousands of satellites into space next year to kickstart its initiative. With a streamlined application process, Amazon aims to expedite its service launch, positioning itself to compete with SpaceX's Starlink service in a more timely manner.
