iOS 17, Apple's latest iteration of its iPhone operating system, has officially been released for download. Packed with an array of exciting features like StandBy Mode, customizable stickers, the ability to set multiple timers, and more, this update promises to enhance your iPhone experience. In this article, we'll delve into some of the standout features you should explore after upgrading.
How to Upgrade to iOS 17
To get your hands on iOS 17, follow these simple steps. Open the Settings app, scroll down and select General, then tap on Software Update. If your iPhone is eligible for the update, you'll see an option to upgrade to iOS 17. Keep in mind that while iOS 17 is launching today, it may not be immediately available for all users. If you own an iPhone older than the XR or XS, or the first-generation iPhone SE, unfortunately, you won't be able to install iOS 17. If you're not in a rush to upgrade, it's a good idea to wait a few days in case Apple needs to iron out any initial bugs.
iOS 17 Features to Explore First
1. Enhanced Autocorrect:
Tired of your iPhone "helpfully" replacing your choice words? In iOS 17, Autocorrect becomes smarter, learning your preferred vocabulary, even if it includes colorful language. If it insists on making unwanted changes, simply tap an on-screen undo button to revert to your original input.
2. Check In for Safety:
The new Check In feature in Messages ensures your loved ones know when you've safely arrived at your chosen destination. It sends your route, cell connectivity, and phone's battery level. While we couldn't test this feature during the iOS 17 beta, we plan to provide more information on its effectiveness once it's available.
3. Multiple Timers:
For the first time ever, you can set multiple timers simultaneously on your iPhone. Easily label each timer for clarity, just like you do with alarms.
4. StandBy Mode:
When charging your phone horizontally, StandBy Mode transforms your iPhone into a versatile device, offering clock, calendar, digital photo frame, and widget smart stacks. It even adjusts its display to red at night for a less intrusive experience. Note that StandBy Mode is optimized for iPhones with always-on displays, such as the iPhone 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max, 15 Pro, or 15 Pro Max.
5. Sticker Extravaganza:
iOS 17 elevates the Messages app by providing quick access to all your stickers, including those from third-party apps. You can even create custom stickers from your own photos for added flair.
6. Video Effects with Gestures:
iOS now boasts eight effects like rain, confetti, and hearts, available in video calls. Trigger them via a menu or with hand gestures in front of your iPhone's front-facing camera. This feature works in FaceTime and compatible third-party apps, but it requires an iPhone 12 or newer for gesture controls.
7. Visual Voicemails:
Incoming voicemails are now transcribed in real-time, appearing as text on your lock screen, allowing you to decide whether to answer the call.
8. Improved Group Chats in Messages:
Managing large group chats is easier with inline replies, making it simple to respond to specific messages with a swipe. Enhanced search functionality with multiple filters helps you find what you need. Additionally, audio messages in Messages now come with transcriptions, making them more accessible.
9. NameDrop Your Contact Info:
You can instantly share contact details by bringing your iPhone close to another iPhone. You can also create personalized contact posters for a more visual approach to sharing contact information.
10. Safari Privacy Enhancements:
Safari introduces multiple profiles to keep your browsing habits separate. Private Browsing tabs require reauthorization after 15 minutes, enhancing your privacy when handing your phone to others.
Coming Soon: Stay tuned for additional iOS 17 features, including the Journal app for reflection and secure file sharing with AirDrop improvements.
Remember that keeping your devices updated is generally a good practice, and the latest software often brings exciting new features and enhanced security. While there may be initial bugs, the compelling new features and privacy improvements in iOS 17 make it a worthwhile upgrade.
