Elon Musk has proposed the idea that all users of X, formerly known as Twitter, might be required to pay for access to the platform. During a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the billionaire suggested that implementing a payment system could be the only effective way to combat the issue of automated bots on the platform.
"We're considering introducing a nominal monthly fee for platform usage," stated Elon Musk, who heads both Tesla and SpaceX.
The BBC approached X for further clarification on this proposal but has yet to receive an official statement from the company. It remains uncertain whether Musk's comments were merely spontaneous remarks or if they hint at more concrete plans that have yet to be disclosed.
Elon Musk has consistently advocated for charging users for verification as a solution to the problem of bots and fake accounts on the social media platform. Since taking control of Twitter last year, he has sought to encourage users to pay for an enhanced service now branded as X Premium. This initiative has involved offering paid subscribers additional features such as longer posts and increased visibility on the platform, but currently, users can still access X for free.
Although there is a clear financial incentive for the company to charge users, Musk emphasized that the primary objective of implementing user fees is to combat bots effectively. He explained, "A bot can be created for a mere fraction of a penny, but if individuals have to pay even a small amount, the cost to bots becomes prohibitively high."
In the United States, X Premium currently costs $8 per month, with pricing varying by country. Elon Musk indicated that lower-tier pricing options were under consideration to make it accessible to a broader user base.
"This is a more extensive conversation, but from my perspective, it's the only viable defense against the proliferation of bots," added Mr. Musk.
However, there is a potential risk associated with placing X behind a paywall, as it could result in a significant loss of users. This, in turn, might impact advertising revenue, which currently forms the bulk of the company's income.
During his conversation with the Israeli Prime Minister, Elon Musk also addressed concerns about antisemitism on X. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has criticized the platform for not doing enough to combat antisemitic content.
In response, Mr. Musk has vowed to take legal action against the ADL to protect the platform's reputation. He reiterated his stance against antisemitism during his discussion with Mr. Netanyahu.
The Israeli Prime Minister acknowledged the challenge of striking a balance between free speech and content moderation and encouraged Musk to find the right equilibrium. "I hope you can find, within the bounds of the First Amendment, the means to combat not only antisemitism but any form of collective hatred that antisemitism represents," Netanyahu remarked, expressing confidence in Musk's commitment to this cause.
