| Disappointing Announcement Leaves Hollow Knight: Silksong Fans Disheartened |
Numerous Hollow Knight: Silksong enthusiasts are expressing dismay following Unity's recent announcement of significant alterations to its service costs. If these changes were to be fully implemented, it could spell adversity for the gaming industry. Hollow Knight: Silksong was unveiled back in February 2019, a classic case of announcing a sequel way too early. However, this was partly due to Team Cherry's status as a small indie studio working on an exceptionally ambitious project, and fans have been patient in light of these circumstances. Besides a few jests and memes, most Hollow Knight: Silksong fans are willing to wait.
Previously, it was anticipated that Hollow Knight: Silksong would be available on Xbox Game Pass (as well as other platforms) on its release day in the first half of 2023. Unfortunately, several Microsoft announcements for that period did not include the game. Presently, Hollow Knight: Silksong lacks a release date, and Unity's recent changes may exacerbate this situation.
The crux of the matter revolves around Unity's decision to charge developers for each game installation using its engine. Even those on a Unity Pro plan, which reportedly costs $2000 per year, would face a higher threshold before incurring charges, albeit with slightly reduced fees. This has sparked an outcry among many indie developers, potentially leading to financial turmoil for them. Furthermore, in theory, disgruntled users could maliciously install a game to overwhelm an indie studio financially. Initial reports indicated that this fee would even apply to installs through Xbox Game Pass, though later reports suggested that Unity would charge the distributor (Microsoft) instead. This is likely to be met with resistance from the tech giant. In sum, it's a mixture of unfavorable developments and poor communication, and its potential impact on game development, particularly within the indie scene, cannot be underestimated.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently being developed with Unity, and it is unlikely to launch before Unity's new pricing plan takes effect on January 1, 2024. Even for older games, the plan applies to installations made after that date, creating a quandary. Some fans have suggested waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong to be ported to another game engine, a process that could add several years to the development timeline. Others are simply upset. As of now, Team Cherry has not made a public statement regarding Unity's announcement.
The prevailing speculation within the industry is that Unity will eventually backtrack on these changes, although nothing is certain at this point. What is evident, however, is the loss of trust among many developers in Unity for implementing such alterations, the impact on eagerly anticipated and smaller-scale games, and the potential consequences for gamers as well.
Hollow Knight: Silksong remains in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
