A recently emerging indie action RPG has been making waves on Kickstarter. “Anima – Song From the Abyss” is the latest creation from the Spain-based Anima Project studio.

While Anima Project has been in the gaming scene since 2005 and has already released several titles, “Anima – Song From the Abyss” marks their debut Kickstarter venture and is undoubtedly their most ambitious project to date. Drawing inspiration from stylish action games like NieR Automata and expansive open-world titles such as The Witcher, the game's direction has been significantly influenced by these successful predecessors.

Previous installments in the Anima series were self-published and, despite showing promise, bore the mark of budget constraints. Nevertheless, they managed to captivate players with their intriguing game worlds and lengthy journeys, clearly demonstrating the team's dedication. With "Song From the Abyss," it will be intriguing to gauge how it measures up to NieR Automata, especially given the significant impact the latter had on previous Anima entries.

A striking distinction with "Song From the Abyss" is its vivid and vibrant visual aesthetic, a departure from the more subdued tones of its predecessors. The Kickstarter campaign explicitly cites the influence of Zelda, which is evident in the game's rich and saturated environments.

Beyond its visual appeal, "Song of the Abyss" sets out to expand the Anima series with a larger production budget. While it may not be an open-world game per se, it promises extensive and immersive environments for players to explore, thereby enhancing the open-ended structure that has been a hallmark of the series.

One noteworthy gameplay feature making a return from “Gate of Memories” is the ability to switch between characters seamlessly. If executed skillfully, fans of stylish action games can anticipate satisfying combat sequences achieved by seamlessly alternating between protagonists Soren and Noein.

The prospect of witnessing fresh and innovative projects from small development teams is always a source of excitement for the gaming community. Anima Project, consisting of just three individuals, has consistently punched above its weight when it comes to delivering action RPG experiences. Incouragingly, the Kickstarter campaign has already surpassed its initial funding target, offering hope that the increased budget will enable the team to realize its ambitious vision and deliver the game as planned in November 2024.
