Michael Unsworth, author of the Red Dead Redemption series, has announced his departure from developer Rockstar Games after 16 years with the company.
As noted by GTAForums user Rucke, Unsworth recently updated his LinkedIn profile to indicate that he has left the company.
The former storyboard director has worked on virtually every major Rockstar release over the past 16 years. It should be noted that he is one of only three writers credited with writing stories for both Red Dead Redemption games (along with Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser).
Unsworth is also credited with writing dialogue in Grand Theft Auto V and IV, Max Payne 3, LA Noire, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, and others.
Rockstar Games, which celebrates its 24th anniversary today, has seen several high-profile exits over the past few years.
In 2020, veteran screenwriter and Grand Theft Auto producer Lazlow Jones left the company. Jones has worked on the show for almost 20 years and is best known for creating dialogue between the show's characters and satirical radio stations, as well as for his guest appearances as the host of Chattersphere and Fame or Shame in GTA V.
Dan Houser, Rockstar's creative director for more than 20 years, left the studio that same year. Leslie Benzies, the influential CEO of Rockstar North, also passed away in 2016. Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two downplayed the impact of Houser's departure in February 2020, saying the Grand Theft Auto studio "couldn't have been better. Rockstar's owner recently It forecast sales to surge in the next fiscal year, beginning in April 2024, due to the release of "several groundbreaking titles," suggesting that GTA 6 could be released in that timeframe.
In one of the video game industry's most notorious data leaks, more than an hour of GTA 6 development footage was leaked online last September, giving gamers their first taste of the sequel to one of GTA 6's best-selling games of all time.
