EA rejects small-scale FIFA Ultimate Team gambling sanctioned by Austrian court

Electronic Arts will not appeal the $11,700 fine. In 2023, after covering all operating expenses, EA reported net income of $802 million and total assets of $13.4 billion.

Sony was embroiled in a scandal in March and was ordered to refund affected players because the loot boxes were purchased through the PlayStation Store (although it still has an opportunity to appeal).

Explaining the rationale to GameIndustry.biz, an EA spokesperson said, "We disagree with the court's decision and believe that the facts and the law have been misrepresented in this case. However, we have chosen not to appeal to this narrow decision, beyond this individual." Claiming having no legal effect, we believe that our games do not constitute gambling and that we comply fully with local laws.

In Austria, courts rule on individual cases which then have no impact on later proceedings, and EA has won similar cases in this country.
