In a Halloween treat for gaming enthusiasts, Nintendo has surprised fans by releasing three classic titles on October 30th through the Nintendo Switch Online service. Among these releases, Devil World, an iconic but previously unreleased Pac-Man-style game in North America, has taken center stage.

Originally introduced in Japan in 1984, Devil World presents a gameplay style reminiscent of Pac-Man, where players navigate mazes, collect points, and snack on various items for extra scoring. The catch? Instead of traditional power-ups, players find crosses and bibles while facing off against the ultimate adversary - the devil himself, who strives to manipulate the maze's edges in a bid to ensnare the player.

In the 1980s, Nintendo of America implemented a strict policy against religious imagery in NES games. Consequently, a game named "Devil World" was considered unsuitable during a time when the Satanic Panic held the United States in its grip. This led to Devil World's absence from North America until its recent release on the Nintendo Switch Online platform.

While Devil World may not be a modern gaming sensation, its vibrant graphics and unique spin on the Pac-Man concept continue to resonate with retro gaming enthusiasts. Of notable mention, it holds the distinction of being the first console-exclusive game directed by Shigeru Miyamoto. Furthermore, the devil character from Devil World has made cameo appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series, possibly serving as the introduction to this forgotten relic of Nintendo's history for English-speaking fans.

The second NES game added to the Nintendo Switch Online lineup is The Mysterious Murasame Castle, a relatively obscure title outside Japan. This game, bearing a mythic Japanese setting, was never released beyond its homeland during its initial run. Before its debut on the Nintendo Switch Online platform, the only official release was on the 3DS Virtual Console in 2014.

This Halloween, Nintendo has truly resurrected gaming treasures from the past, delighting fans with these vintage classics and rekindling the spirit of nostalgia for a new generation.
