OnePlus Open Foldable Smartphone: Impressive Camera and €1,799 Price

OnePlus, a well-known player in the smartphone industry, has finally ventured into the world of foldable devices with the OnePlus Open. This innovative device marks OnePlus' first foray into the foldable smartphone market, and it comes equipped with some remarkable features. The OnePlus Open takes its design cues from Oppo's recently unveiled Find N3, but it brings these exceptional hardware elements to a wider global audience.

Design and Display

When closed, the OnePlus Open boasts a 6.31-inch Super Fluid LTPO 3.0 AMOLED display with a resolution of 2484x1116 pixels. The display features a dynamic refresh rate that can range from 10Hz to 120Hz, making for smoother interactions. It adheres to a close-to-conventional 20:9 aspect ratio and offers impressive brightness levels with a typical rating of 1,400 nits and a peak brightness of 2,800 nits.

Inside, you'll find a 7.82-inch Flexi-fluid LTPO 3.0 AMOLED display with a resolution of 2440x2268 pixels. This secondary display also boasts a dynamic refresh rate that can vary between 1Hz and 120Hz, providing a versatile user experience. The aspect ratio for this screen is 1.0758:1, and it shares the same outstanding peak brightness as the primary display.

The OnePlus Open comes in two attractive variants: Voyager Black, which features a faux leather finish on the back, and Emerald Dusk (green) with a glass finish. It's worth noting that European buyers will only have access to the latter option. The black model is lighter, weighing in at 239 grams, while the green variant tips the scales at 245 grams. Both options are lighter than the 253-gram Galaxy Z Fold5, and the OnePlus Open retains the classic alert slider for added convenience.

Camera Capabilities

OnePlus has pushed the envelope with the OnePlus Open's camera system, incorporating five cameras with Hasselblad tuning.

The primary rear camera features Sony's new 48MP LYTIA-T808 "pixel stacked" sensor, which boasts a large 1/1.43" size and a 24mm f/1.7 optically-stabilized lens. This sensor utilizes dual-layer transistor technology, offering improved light sensitivity.

The ultrawide camera is equipped with a 48MP 1/2" sensor and a 14mm f/2.2 lens with autofocus. Additionally, there's a telephoto camera with a 64MP 1/2" sensor and a 3x 70mm f/2.6 stabilized lens.

For selfies, there are two cameras: a 20MP unit on the inside and a 32MP camera on the external display.

Hardware and Battery Life

Under the hood, the OnePlus Open is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of storage. It draws power from a 4,805mAh battery, supporting 67W fast charging. OnePlus claims that the device can go from 1% to 100% in just 42 minutes, providing more than a day's worth of usage.

Software and Multitasking

When you unfold the OnePlus Open, you'll experience OnePlus Canvas, a multitasking-focused interface designed from the ground up. OnePlus reports that 95% of mainstream apps are optimized for the expanded display, and users can easily resize the active window in a multi-window setup to suit their preferences. The device supports up to three windows on the screen at any given time, in both vertical and horizontal orientations.

The OnePlus Open is available in a single memory configuration of 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, priced at €1,799 or £1,599. Pre-orders are now open and will run until October 26.
