In an unexpected twist, dedicated Mortal Kombat 1 enthusiasts are voicing their discontent over a surprising Halloween-themed DLC fatality that comes with a rather steep $10 price tag.
Gamers eagerly seeking to obtain this gory jack-o-lantern animation must exchange 1200 Dragon Krystals, a premium in-game currency currently valued at $10 for 1250 krystals.
To put things in perspective, Mortal Kombat 11's Kombat Pack, the previous installment in the series, granted access to multiple full DLC characters for a mere $20. However, Mortal Kombat 1 now charges the equivalent of $10 for just one fatality, despite the game's premium price of approximately £60, or £85 for the premium edition.
As a result, an increasing number of fans are expressing their dissatisfaction with this pricing strategy, accusing NetherRealm of adopting "freemium" pricing for a premium product that already includes content locked behind DLC paywalls.
One Reddit user, u/BarnsleyLad, couldn't contain their frustration, exclaiming, "Are you having a laugh? Can I get a refund for this full-priced freemium model game?"
Another user, u/Extravagod, added, "Is this for real? I genuinely thought it was a joke, like some meme, because the store's prices are already absurd."
Yet another disgruntled player stated, "I paid €100 for a freemium game? What on earth? Seriously, what? This is outrageous. Launch a barebone game, put story-related characters behind a paywall with a Kombat Pack, set up a store with ridiculously high prices, and now this? It's beyond absurd. They should be ashamed. This is a slap in the face of their fanbase, nothing less. What the heck."
This controversy emerges shortly after Gun and Sumo faced a similar uproar over pricey DLC for Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
Notably, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, NetherRealm's free-to-play character-collecting RPG, has officially transitioned out of beta testing after 364 days since its initial reveal. It is now available for download on both iOS and Android platforms, marking a significant milestone for fans of the franchise.
