HP's All-in-One PC: Portable with 83 Wh Rechargeable Battery and Built-in Handle

In the tech landscape, where powerful desktops and featherweight laptops dominate, all-in-one PCs have carved out a niche. However, HP is shaking things up with its Envy Move all-in-one PC, which was just released. This innovative computer comes equipped with a handle and a built-in, rechargeable 83 Wh battery. Plus, it boasts a convenient pocket for its wireless keyboard, making it a portable powerhouse that can accompany you wherever you go.

The Envy Move is impressively lightweight, tipping the scales at just 9.04 pounds, and it measures 21.74×5.85×14.43 inches. HP's Senior Vice President and Division President of Personal Systems Consumer Solutions, Jo Tan, proudly declares it to be the "world's only" all-in-one PC with an integrated battery.

One of its standout features is the built-in stand, which HP claims is supported by two patented technologies. This stand is designed to work seamlessly on any flat surface. In the promotional videos shared with the press, the device's two feet appear to align horizontally with the device's bottom edge until they make contact with a surface. At that point, they flip out perpendicular to the machine's bottom edge, ensuring stability.

Now, let's talk about battery life. HP asserts that the Envy Move can last up to four hours based on its testing across three scenarios. These include MobileMark25's test (specific conditions not provided), streaming Netflix over Wi-Fi and Edge with the screen set to 200 nits, and playing 1080p local video at full screen with maximum audio, with Wi-Fi "on but not connected."

As with any manufacturer's battery life claims, some skepticism is warranted. However, even four hours might fall short of a full workday's needs, especially when compared to the battery life offered by many modern thin-and-light laptops. Nevertheless, those laptops don't come with a generous 23.8-inch display like the Envy Move does. Of course, you always have the option to plug in the Envy Move for uninterrupted power.

To maximize battery life, the Envy Move relies on a U-series processor, offering up to an Intel Core i5-1335U. This processor boasts two Performance-cores (P-cores) that can clock up to 4.6 GHz, eight Efficient-cores (E-cores) reaching up to 3.4 GHz, and 12 threads. While it may not sport the most robust specifications, it is marketed as a versatile, family-friendly device. In comparison, Lenovo's ThinkCentre M90a Pro Gen 3, announced in January, goes all the way up to an i7-12700 vPro with eight P-cores reaching up to 4.8 GHz, four E-cores at up to 3.6 GHz, and 20 threads, alongside an integrated Nvidia GeForce MX550 (2GB GDDR6).

The Envy Move offers additional specs, including up to 16GB of LPDDR5-4800 memory and 1TB of PCIe 4.0 storage.

The display boasts a resolution of 2560×1440 IPS and supports touch functionality, which can be handy for kids (who tend to interact with every screen they encounter these days) and allows you to forego the keyboard if desired. HP claims a brightness of up to 300 nits and 99 percent sRGB coverage, although it's worth noting that many monitors and portable laptops are now emphasizing DCI-P3 color gamuts.

In terms of ports, the Envy Move keeps it simple with one USB-A (up to 10Gbps), one USB-C (with DisplayPort 1.4a and up to 10Gbps speeds), and HDMI 1.4b.

While all-in-one computers may not be for everyone, the Envy Move brings a fresh perspective to the category. With its versatility and mobility, it could potentially serve as an excellent solution for a central, portable home computing device with a spacious screen. Manufacturers seem increasingly interested in making larger screens mobile, as evidenced by LG's unique approach with the 27-inch StanbyME Go.
