Regardless of the graphical performance setting chosen by players in Spider-Man 2, ray tracing will come as a standard feature. In a recent interview with IGN, Insomniac's Director of Core Technology, Mike Fitzgerald, and Project Director, Jeannette Lee, provided insight into the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 exclusive title.

The developers emphasized that Spider-Man 2 represents the culmination of their experience in developing for the PlayStation 5, building upon their previous successes with titles like Spider-Man Remastered, Miles Morales, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.

Fitzgerald expressed, "Our performance mode for this title has ray tracing on by default," highlighting the expanded use of ray-traced reflections throughout the game, particularly evident in water and ocean rendering, which contributes to a heightened sense of realism across the entire game world.

In addition to graphical enhancements, Fitzgerald credited the PS5's SSD and storage solution for enabling "faster traversal" within Spider-Man 2's rendition of New York City. Players can anticipate moving at significantly higher speeds when launching from the game's slingshots, roughly three times faster than the previous Spider-Man installment.

Fitzgerald further noted that fast travel and character switching have been optimized, providing players with more freedom and a broader range of gameplay possibilities. The enhanced character models and lifelike animations also play a crucial role in delivering richer and more nuanced storytelling.

Moreover, the developers made it clear that ray tracing will be available across all aspects of the game, not limited to the performance mode mentioned earlier. They have strived to ensure that Spider-Man 2 presents its stunning visual fidelity consistently, eliminating the need for players to toggle ray tracing on or off.

"In this game, we're delivering ray tracing as the baseline performance mode," Fitzgerald affirmed, emphasizing their commitment to delivering the ideal Spider-Man visual experience to every player.
