In the latest software update, version 57, for Meta Quest headsets, the company has unveiled a range of exciting features. These enhancements include expanded options for customizing avatars, a message “unsend” feature, group links, free-form locomotion in Horizon Home, and a rebranding of the Explore feed. Meta has also made improvements to video recording, multitasking, and more.
Starting today, the v57 update is gradually rolling out to Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets. Additional features are expected to be unveiled at Meta's Connect event later this month.
In conjunction with today's announcement, Meta has noted in its v57 release notes that it is discontinuing a casting feature in the iOS app that allowed users to mirror their VR experience on their iPhone.
With the new update, the avatar creator now boasts color sliders, enabling users to finely tune their skin tone, hair color, and eyebrow color. This addition allows for greater personalization, enabling users to better represent their real-life appearance. Meta has also introduced new makeup and face paint options to further enhance avatar customization.
Meta has been steadily enhancing its avatar creator, introducing new body shapes and improving hair and clothing textures. However, one of the standout updates has been the introduction of legs for avatars, a feature currently in beta testing.
Moreover, users can now unsend image messages in both VR and the Meta Quest mobile app. To retract a message, users simply hover over it and select "unsend message." Both the sender and recipient will receive a notification that the message has been unsent. This feature is available in several countries, including the U.S., Australia, Canada, Iceland, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan.
Among the minor updates, Meta is introducing group links, making it easy for users to invite friends by generating a link and sharing it within VR or on various messaging platforms like Instagram or Facebook.
Meeting up with friends in virtual spaces is now more convenient, as users can invite a group to an app directly from the People tab. This invitation will be displayed in the group chat, ensuring everyone can see it and join. Additionally, the contacts list will no longer remain hidden in the People tab; It will automatically appear when the headset is turned on.
Horizon Home, the virtual space where users visit each other's homes, is gaining an essential capability. In addition to teleporting within VR apps, users can now freely teleport within Home, enabling them to explore every corner of their virtual environment. Users can activate free-form locomotion by pushing the controller thumbstick forward and selecting a spot in their Home to teleport.
The Explore feed, which apps suggest, is being renamed “Horizon Feed” to align with the Horizon Worlds branding.
Other minor updates include a new default option for users to mute their microphone audio when recording video and the ability to use multiple apps simultaneously and switch between views. Additionally, Meta has disabled boundary warning in some apps with mixed reality experiences to prevent interruptions for users.
