Google's Recent Product Closures: A Comprehensive Overview

In recent times, Google has been trimming down its product portfolio at a noticeable pace. This article aims to provide an overview of the latest developments in Google's product landscape, focusing on three key discontinuations.

1. Farewell to Google Podcasts:

The demise of Google Podcasts has been a long-anticipated move. With the introduction of YouTube Podcasts earlier this year, Google found itself with two podcast platforms, which seemed unnecessary. The official announcement came via the YouTube blog, confirming that Google Podcasts would be discontinued "later in 2024." In the meantime, YouTube Podcasts is set to expand globally by the end of the year.

Google Podcasts, which began as a somewhat obscure mobile-only offering within Google Search in 2016, had a slow start. It only gained essential podcast features like subscription support in 2018 and an iOS app in 2020. Despite its eight-year history, Google Podcasts struggled to gain traction, with statistics showing that only 4% of podcast users in the US prefer it over YouTube, which boasts a 23% user share, according to Edison.

2. YouTube Premium Lite's Light Goes Out:

YouTube Premium Lite, a budget-friendly version of the full YouTube Premium package, will soon be a thing of the past. This pared-down offering provided ad-free access to YouTube videos at a lower cost. However, it was limited to a handful of European countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. As part of Google's strategy to consolidate its pricing structure, YouTube Premium's cost increased to $13.99 in July. Consequently, YouTube Premium Lite subscribers in those select European countries received emails informing them of the discontinuation, effective October 25, 2023.

3. Goodbye to Basic HTML Gmail:

Google's "Basic HTML" Gmail client, a lightweight version designed for users with browser compatibility issues, is set to be archived in early January 2024. Over the years, this stripped-down version has provided an alternative for accessing Gmail when the default web client posed problems. It has retained a retro charm, resembling Gmail's earlier iterations before the era of extensive JavaScript and white space.

However, the Basic HTML Gmail client lacks numerous features that have been incorporated into the full Gmail experience, such as label colors, offline support, encrypted email, and scheduled sending. Its simplicity and small file size (around 143KB) contrast sharply with the resource-intensive full-fat Gmail, which can reach about 14.4MB in data usage. Despite its limitations, Basic HTML Gmail has been appreciated by visually impaired users due to its compatibility with screen readers. In light of this change, Google is providing resources and suggestions for screen reader-friendly use of the current Gmail interface.

As Google continues to streamline its product lineup, it's essential for users to stay informed about these changes. While some products may face the chopping block, Google remains committed to enhancing its core services and user experience.
