| Discover 10 Hidden PS5 and PS4 Games in Latest Week's Nintendo Direct |
Last week, a surprising announcement delighted classic PS1 enthusiasts eager to earn new trophies, and surprisingly, it had nothing to do with the recent Sony PlayStation State of Play's Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date reveal. In fact, if you didn't catch the recent Nintendo Direct for September 2023, you might have missed several exciting PlayStation reveals.
Tomb Raider PS1 Remasters and More Unveiled at Nintendo Direct
The standout PS1-related revelation came during the Nintendo Direct showcase on Thursday, September 14, 2023. It was announced that brand-new trophies for Tomb Raider I-III Remastered are set to arrive on both PS5 and PS4 next year. Given the immense success of the original Tomb Raider games on Sony's original PlayStation, one would have expected this news to feature prominently at the State of Play event on the same day, but it appears that Nintendo took the lead.
The forthcoming Tomb Raider collection was just one of six fresh PS5 and PS4 games unveiled during the Nintendo Direct, with a total of 10 upcoming PlayStation titles showcased throughout the event. In terms of previously revealed games, we were treated to new footage for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Horizon Chase 2, and Super Crazy Rhythm Castle, all of which continue to impress. Additionally, the highly anticipated successor to Suikoden, Eiyuden Chronicles Hundred Heroes, now has a release date: Friday, April 12, 2024.
Among the new PS5 and PS4 announcements, the most captivating is a brand-new game from Atlus, known for Persona, and Vanillaware, the developer behind 13 Sentinels. This game, titled Unicorn Overlord, is a tactical RPG that appears to combine Vanillaware's signature 2D action with the turn-based mechanics of titles like Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem. If this doesn't pique your interest, I strongly recommend exploring the three Vanillaware titles announced as new PS Plus Extra and Premium games for September 2023 — these developers consistently produce outstanding games.
Staying within the realm of RPGs, a new SaGa game has been revealed for both PS5 and PS4. This marks the first console entry in the series since 2016's exceptional SaGa Scarlet Grace, which made its way to the PS4 in the West in 2019. Formerly known as the Final Fantasy Legend series, these games have quietly pushed the boundaries of the classic turn-based JRPG genre, and SaGa Emerald Beyond appears set to continue that tradition.
Fans of League of Legends will delve deeper into the game's lore with the spin-off title, Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story, slated for release on PS5 and PS4 in 2023. Additionally, esteemed developer WayForward takes charge of the Contra series with Contra Operation Galuga, offering hope for a return to form after the disappointing Contra Rogue Corps.
Lastly, besides the revelation of a new Among Us map in the works, the final noteworthy PlayStation announcement at the event was Spy x Anya Operation Memories, scheduled to launch on both PS5 and PS4 sometime in 2024. Personally, as a devoted fan of the Spy x Family anime, I believe Operation Memories appears to be a perfect adaptation for the series. The prospect of spending time with the Spy x Family characters and capturing moments through photography sounds incredibly appealing to me.
That covers the exciting PS5 and PS4 game announcements from the recent Nintendo Direct! While Sony's State of Play naturally featured most of the noteworthy PS5 game reveals for the upcoming months, it's amusing to note that a Nintendo Direct managed to unveil more new PlayStation games than a State of Play event. Are any of the aforementioned titles catching your eye? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
