CD Projekt Advises Cyberpunk PC Players to Verify Cooling Systems Before Phantom Liberty Launch

In anticipation of the imminent release of the Phantom Liberty expansion and the 2.0 update for Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt, the game's developer, is advising PC players to ensure that their gaming rigs are up to the task.

Lead scene programmer Filip Pierściński took to the X platform to issue a call to action for Cyberpunk PC players, specifically urging them to pay special attention to their cooling systems.

“We utilize all the resources available in your setup, so we expect the CPU to operate at 90% utilization on an 8-core system,” Pierściński explained. "To save time and avoid potential issues, we recommend running benchmark tests like Cinebench or similar tools to verify the stability of your systems."

Cinebench is a free, cross-platform benchmarking suite used to assess a computer's hardware capabilities. The emphasis on cooling systems stems from concerns that players may encounter “thermal throttling,” a phenomenon that can lead to decreased performance or even game crashes.

In June, CD Projekt updated the PC system requirements for Cyberpunk, with a specific emphasis on supporting SSDs as the minimum storage requirement moving forward. These changes were implemented to keep the game up to date, especially since the expansion is launching nearly three years after the base game, and the aim is to target resolutions of either 1080p or 4K.

It's important to note that while the Phantom Liberty expansion is a paid DLC, it will be accompanied by a substantial patch that will overhaul the base game. Consequently, the PC version's system demands are expected to increase.

Cyberpunk 2.0 is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC concurrently with the Phantom Liberty expansion on September 26. For more details, you can also refer to IGN's hands-on impressions of Phantom Liberty.
