Larian Studios is set to overhaul the romance dynamics in Baldur's Gate 3 following an amusing discovery that the game's companions were overly eager to declare their affections for the player character, all thanks to an unintended bug.

Upon the game's initial release in August on PC, players quickly noticed that the companions in Baldur's Gate 3 were prone to express their feelings towards the protagonist at an astonishingly rapid pace. Sometimes, it took only minutes after recruiting them. Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, clarified that this was not the intended experience. Speaking during Pax West 2023, Vincke revealed that the companions' enthusiastic advances were the result of a glitch. Each character was supposed to have a hidden approval threshold that determined when they would initiate romantic interactions with the player. However, these thresholds were erroneously set too low during the game's launch.

To rectify this issue, Larian Studios has already raised the approval thresholds for some companions and plans to adjust the thresholds for the remaining cast members in the near future. This alteration aims to make romancing characters in Baldur's Gate 3 more nuanced and less straightforward, aligning with the studio's original intention of simulating "real relationships" rather than creating a hilariously amorous supporting cast. While specific details of the romance fixes weren't divulged, it was confirmed that Gale was notably affected by this bug, causing him to instantly show interest in the player character.

Despite Larian's efforts to introduce more realism to Baldur's Gate 3's relationships, the initial romance bug left a lasting mark on the game's online community. This is evident in the rise of humorous "romance speedruns" that became popular shortly after the game's release. The current world record holder in the tongue-in-cheek "Sex%" category is a Canadian player known as maeeeeee, who managed to complete one romance storyline in Baldur's Gate 3 in just over two minutes.

The upcoming changes to Baldur's Gate 3's romance system are expected to be in place by the time the game arrives on current-generation Xbox consoles in late 2023. This version of the RPG was initially slated for a 2024 release but was expedited after Microsoft decided to Exclude split-screen multiplayer from the Xbox Series S launch due to technical challenges.

Baldur's Gate 3 is currently available on PC, with a PS5 version released on September 6, and an Xbox Series
