The Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker, Friesland, has experienced a significant uptick in visitors since receiving UNESCO World Heritage status. According to Adrie Warmenhoven, the planetarium's director, the announcement has had an immediate impact, with the number of visitors doubling just two days after the prestigious designation.
"Usually, during a weekday in September, we see around 150 visitors. Now, that number has surged to 300, which is quite remarkable," noted Warmenhoven. He expressed his satisfaction with the increased recognition the planetarium is receiving after attaining World Heritage status.
Warmenhoven anticipates a continued rise in attendance over the upcoming weekend and advises prospective visitors to purchase tickets in advance to secure their entry. In response to the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the planetarium has implemented measures such as time slot reservations and a daily cap on the number of visitors.
The Eise Eisinga Planetarium, constructed between 1774 and 1781, serves as a captivating mechanical scale model of the solar system as understood during that era. Created by Eise Eisinga, a wool manufacturer and an ordinary citizen, this unique model is ingeniously integrated into the ceiling and south wall of Eisinga's former living room and bedroom.
UNESCO recognized this remarkable achievement, emphasizing that a pendulum clock powers the model, providing near-precise representations of the positions of celestial bodies, including the Sun, Earth, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The distances between the planets are accurately scaled, and the planets' orbits are depicted in real-time motion.
The Eise Eisinga Planetarium now joins the prestigious UNESCO list as the thirteenth site in the Kingdom of the Netherlands to receive this distinction. Other renowned Dutch sites on the list include the Wadden Sea, the historic canal ring in Amsterdam, the iconic windmills of Kinderdijk, and the charming Willemstad city center on the Caribbean island of CuraƧao.
