How to play Sea of Thieves with your friends on private servers

Sea of Thieves, the popular pirate adventure game from Rare, is finally getting one of the most requested features from its community: private servers. Starting next week, players will be able to create and join custom servers where they can enjoy the game without the risk of being attacked by other players.

Private servers have been in the works for a long time, as Rare announced them back in June 20201. However, the feature was initially limited to a select group of content creators and community groups who used them for hosting events and creating videos1. The feedback from this alpha test helped Rare to improve and refine the feature before making it available to the wider public.

According to Rare, private servers will be accessible from the Pirate Emporium, the in-game store where players can purchase cosmetics and other items with real money2. Players will be able to create a server with up to six ships and invite their friends or other players to join them. The server settings will allow the host to customize various aspects of the game, such as the time of day, the weather, the difficulty of enemies, and the availability of resources2.

However, private servers will not be a way to earn gold or reputation in the game, as Rare wants to preserve the balance and progression of the live game1. Private servers are meant to be a tool for players who want to explore the game world, create their own stories, or host fun events with their friends or community1. Players who want to experience the full Sea of Thieves adventure, with its challenges, rewards, and surprises, will still need to play on the regular servers.

Sea of Thieves Season 10, which launched in October, introduced another major feature: Guilds2. Guilds allow players to form groups of up to 24 members and work together to earn new rewards and cosmetics through a shared reputation system2. Guilds also make it easier for players to share their ships and join each other’s sessions2.

Sea of Thieves is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass. The private servers feature will go live on December 8, 2023.
