Fans of The Boys and Mortal Kombat were excited when NetherRealm Studios announced that Homelander, the ruthless leader of The Seven, would be joining the roster of Mortal Kombat 1 as a guest character. However, they were also hoping that Antony Starr, the actor who portrays Homelander in the Amazon Prime show, would lend his voice to the character in the game. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case.
Starr recently confirmed on his Instagram account that he is not voicing Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1, much to the disappointment of his followers. One of them, @vaguelyokay, asked him directly: “Are you voicing Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1?” Starr’s reply was simple and clear: “Nope.”1
This news comes as a surprise, given that NetherRealm Studios has secured Starr’s likeness for Homelander, who is set to hit the game as part of Kombat Pack 1. The developer has also managed to get the voice and likeness of J.K. Simmons, who plays Omni-Man in the animated series Invincible, for another guest character in the same pack. Simmons’ Omni-Man was released last month and has received positive feedback from the fans and critics.2
NetherRealm Studios has also confirmed that John Cena, the actor and wrestler who plays Peacemaker in the upcoming HBO Max series, has provided voice work for his character in Mortal Kombat 1. Peacemaker is the third guest character in Kombat Pack 1, along with Homelander and Omni-Man.3
In previous Mortal Kombat games, NetherRealm Studios has been able to get the original actors to voice their respective characters, such as Sylvester Stallone (Rambo), Peter Weller (RoboCop), and Keith David (Spawn). However, there have been some exceptions, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who did not voice the Terminator despite lending his likeness to the character. NetherRealm Studios had to use a sound-alike actor for the role instead.4
It is unclear why Starr is not voicing Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1, or who will replace him. It is possible that Starr is joking or hiding the truth until the official announcement, but it is also possible that he was not available or interested in the project. It is worth noting that Starr did voice Homelander in another video game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which was released last year.
Homelander is expected to join Mortal Kombat 1 early next year, along with Peacemaker. The Kombat Pack 1 also includes three returning Mortal Kombat characters: Ermac, Quan Chi, and Takeda. Mortal Kombat 1 is the latest installment in the popular fighting game franchise, and has sold over three million copies since its launch in 2023. The game has won several awards, including the Best Multiplayer Game at the Golden Joystick Awards.
However, Mortal Kombat 1 has also faced some controversy and criticism, especially regarding its post-launch monetization and content. Some fans have expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of unlockable items and skins for the DLC characters, as well as the sale of Fatalities for real-world money. Some fans have also argued that Mortal Kombat 1 does not deserve the accolades it has received, and that other fighting games, such as Street Fighter 6, are more deserving.
What do you think of Starr not voicing Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1? Are you still excited to play as the character, or do you think it will ruin the experience? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
