Cyberpunk 2077 Quest Director Thanks Fans for Keeping the Faith After ‘Heartbreaking’ Launch

Cyberpunk 2077, the highly anticipated sci-fi RPG from CD Projekt Red, had a rocky start when it was released in December 2020. The game was plagued by bugs, glitches, and performance issues, especially on the base versions of PS4 and Xbox One. The game received harsh criticism from players and reviewers alike, and Sony even removed it from the PlayStation Store, offering refunds to those who bought it. The game’s launch was a huge blow to the reputation and morale of CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the acclaimed The Witcher series.

However, after nearly two years of hard work and dedication, the developers have managed to turn the game around, with multiple patches, updates, and improvements. The game also received a next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in February 2022, enhancing the graphics and performance. Moreover, the game’s popularity soared after the release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a spin-off anime series on Netflix that explores the lives of different characters in the dystopian Night City. The anime received positive reviews from critics and fans, and boosted the sales and player count of Cyberpunk 2077.

According to industry analyst Benji Sales, Cyberpunk 2077 was the second best-selling game on Steam in September 2022, and reached 85,555 concurrent players, the highest number since January 20211. CD Projekt Red also reported that over 1 million people played Cyberpunk 2077 every day in the week following the launch of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners2.

The game’s resurgence has been a source of joy and relief for the developers, who have expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the fans for giving them a second chance. Pawel Sasko, the quest director of Cyberpunk 2077, took to Twitter and Twitch to thank the community for their support and feedback. Sasko, who was previously the lead quest designer for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, became emotional as he recalled the difficult times after the game’s launch, and how it affected him and his colleagues.

“Thank you so much chooms for this second chance”, Sasko tweeted3. “You mad lads are incredible. Thank you for watching, and for playing the game. Will do what I can to make you proud for supporting us.”

On his Twitch channel, Sasko opened up about the impact of the game’s launch on his mental health, and how he felt seeing the game being appreciated by so many people after the long and challenging development process.

“It’s hard to express, when you’re putting so much heart and work into something,” he said. "And you know for some of us it’s been six, seven, eight years sometimes, especially for those who started at the very beginning. So, to have this moment, of people liking something that we did, it’s really feeling a bit unreal. That finally people are appreciating it."4

Sasko also revealed that he was “completely wrecked” after the game’s release, and that his girlfriend saw him in a bad state. He said that it was “heartbreaking” to see the game being criticized and rejected by many players, and that it took him some time to accept and cope with the situation.

"After the release, I couldn’t believe - after some time, I did - but at the beginning I couldn’t believe, and I remember […] my dear girlfriend, she was seeing me fking completely wrecked," he said. "But it’s good to be back. It’s fking good to be back. That was really so heartbreaking."4

Sasko’s words reflect the passion and commitment that the developers of Cyberpunk 2077 have for their game, and their desire to deliver the best possible experience to the fans. The game’s comeback is a testament to the quality and potential of Cyberpunk 2077, and the resilience and perseverance of CD Projekt Red. The game still has a lot to offer, with upcoming DLCs, expansions, and multiplayer mode. Cyberpunk 2077 is not only back, but it’s here to stay.
