On October 20th, the world of gaming witnessed a unique moment akin to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, but this time it was all about gaming heroes. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder made their debut on the same day, creating a delightful juxtaposition of gameplay experiences.
Just as the "Barbenheimer" event brought together the bright and cheerful Barbie with the intense and grim Oppenheimer, "Super Spider Bros" presented contrasting gaming experiences. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 for PlayStation delves into darker territories, reminiscent of "Empire Strikes Back," as it introduces formidable new adversaries like Venom, challenging both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in their heroic endeavors. On the other hand, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a delightful 2D platformer where our beloved plumber transforms into an elephant, adding a whimsical twist to the adventure.
While it may not be as stark a contrast as "Barbenheimer," both Mario and Spider-Man are inherently family-friendly, unlike Oppenheimer. Still, the simultaneous release of these two beloved franchises is a delightful coincidence, making it one of the standout moments of 2023 in the gaming world.
This year has been packed with exciting game launches, but "Super Spider Bros" stands out. The closest analogy was the release of Starfield on Xbox and PC, and the PS5 port of Baldur's Gate 3 on September 6th, although both are massive RPGs.
The good news is that both Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder have been exceptionally well-received, earning scores of 91 and 93 on Metacritic, respectively. MobileSyrup shares the enthusiasm for both games; be sure to check out our detailed reviews of Spider-Man and Mario.
Additionally, MobileSyrup has more to offer fans of both franchises. For Mario enthusiasts, we have an exclusive interview with Wonder director Shiro Mouri and the legendary Mario designer, Takashi Tezuka. In case you missed it, we've also got the scoop on who has taken over as the new voice of Mario.
For fans of Marvel's Spider-Man, we have two insightful interviews. One delves into the narrative aspect with Ben Arfmann, the narrative director, and Lauren Mee, the advanced senior writer. Update (October 20, 2023, 12:27 PM ET): Shoutout to Brent on Twitter for pointing out that we did get a similar gaming pairing in 2020 with Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. We appreciate the reminder, as those early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic were quite the whirlwind!
