There is a way to remove it

| Why Riot is removing popular new game modes from LoL |
Riot Games has a history of introducing various game modes to League of Legends, including Twisted Treeline, Dominion, Ascension, Invasion, Odyssey: Extraction, Black Market Brawlers, Nexus Blitz, and others. While some have made a return or become permanent, others have been temporary additions. This raises the question: Why invest so much effort in creating game modes that won't stick around?
This past summer, Riot unveiled a new game mode called Arena. Arena is a 2v2v2v2 mode where teams engage in quick and chaotic 2v2 skirmishes. Players receive unique augments that transform their playstyle every few rounds, such as Chauffeur, which links you permanently to your ally and provides buffs. However, Arena, like its predecessors, was only available for a limited time in December. Yet, this was all part of Riot's strategy.
Eduardo Cortejoso, a game producer at Riot Games, explained, "In the past, modes have been measured by hitting a certain number of game hours or a certain number of purchases per account. With Arena, especially given League's earlier struggles in the year, We aimed to rebuild player trust."
Arena was introduced as part of Riot's response to criticism following a disappointing cinematic release at the start of 2023. Fans expressed concerns about the game stagnating and League of Legends' lore taking a backseat. The developers saw Arena as a way to create a manageable, buildable, and refreshing experience.
“League thrives when players engage in team competition or shared moments,” Cortejoso noted. "We wanted to maintain the team aspect, so we settled on 2v2 after testing different combinations. It's the minimum number of players needed for a team-oriented game, reducing barriers while maximizing the coordination between players."
Arena garnered positive feedback from fans but disappeared from the client after its initial run. The good news is that both Nexus Blitz and Arena are set to return, with the next iteration of Arena featuring tweaks and new augments for players to experiment with.
Riot's approach to temporary game modes has shifted with Arena. Previously, these modes were often variations of standard PvP matches, such as One for All or Hexakill. Arena departs from this format by explicitly targeting shorter timeframes and incorporating more randomness through the augment system.
Cortejoso acknowledges that this approach may serve a smaller player base but hopes it will yield a broader range of player experiences. “We expect to keep things on the lighter side from a development perspective and learn a lot in the coming years,” he explained. "So, expect more innovative modes from the League of Legends team."
