Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 become quietly rebuilt via way of means of developer Dear Esther The Chinese Room with "unique gameplay mechanics and RPG systems"; |
It's in reality now no longer what I expected. The annoying Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 that I almost gave up on is now coming out next fall, more than four years after it was originally scheduled for release. Paradox Interactive selected The Chinese Room, creators of Dear Esther and Everyone's Gone to the Rapture, to bring this exciting RPG to the finish line. "Tight" doesn't exactly describe Bloodlines 2. The sequel to the 2004 cult classic Troika (and one of my favorite games) was originally scheduled for release in March 2020. The first major delay came with the announcement of the layoffs of head writer Brian Mitsoda (who also played a major role in the original game) and creative director Ka'ai Cluney. Developer Hardsuit Labs has pulled out of the project entirely, and the game has been indefinitely delayed until 2021. Shortly thereafter, The Chinese Room changed into added into the game, which has now been revealed. Ahead of today's news, I had the opportunity to speak with Sean Greaney, Vice President of World of Darkness (the larger framework of Vampire: The Masquerade) at Paradox Interactive, and Alex Skidmore, Creative Director of Bloodlines 2. I'm sorry I have no idea what happened to Hardsuit Labs. version of Bloodlines 2, but I came back looking forward to seeing The Chinese Room for
Vampire: the Masquerade.
I was initially surprised by the developer's choice - The Chinese Room has so far been known for its designs that are rich in storytelling and atmosphere while facilitating gameplay - but the more I thought about it, the more exciting the prospect became. One of Bloodlines 1's strengths is its dense, structured gameplay set in turn-of-the-millennium Los Angeles noir, and The Chinese Room does a great job of evoking a similar sense of place in its games. Skidmore appeared to grade my preliminary reaction: "That's now no longer what I could be operating on within the Chinese Room," he instructed me. And that's really one of the main reasons I joined the group, because I love working on games like this. Bringing serious and immersive role-playing to the project, Skidmore spent many years at Lionhead Studios working on the Fable series before becoming lead designer. on Gears Tactics, an XCOM-style spin-off that we really enjoyed.
The Chinese Room retained the Seattle setting originally planned for Bloodlines 2, and although Greaney noted that it "was able to reuse a significant portion of the graphics and level designs"; Hardsuit Project's Skidmore was quick to explain that The Chinese Room uses a new codebase with different gameplay mechanics and RPG Bloodlines 2 is still set around Christmas but is now being gripped by a historic snowstorm, and the new Bloodlines 2 trailer and concept art reminded me. of Max Payne's dirty modern New York City Ragnarok OG.
We're also getting a completely different hero type than what Hardsuit Labs intended. Bloodlines 2 was originally intended to include the newly remastered "Thin Blood"; Vampire. In the Dark World, older is better, and the legendary lines of antediluvian vampire patriarchs have thinned over the millennia: they simply aren't creating the next generation of vampires like they used to be.
“We don't want it to be just a boring homage or pastiche to Bloodlines 1. We want it to be something standalone,” Skidmore explained. “We're not doing what Bloodlines 1 did, which is bringing out a traditional role- playing game: you're a vampire on one day.The character you are has long been a vampire.Bloodlines offer a different experience.”
Bloodlines 2 will now feature “Elder,” a vampire who awakens from an indefinite stun (read: a long vampire sleep) and awakens from Ancient Vampire: The Masquerade and after 300 years of undead acquired the status of an antique. Beginning with Bloodlines, the joint Vatican/World Intelligence “Second Inquisition” has hit underground vampires hard and wiped out their ranks. An ancient and immensely powerful vampire boy waking up in Seattle is a surefire occurrence.
Skidmore seems to strike a balance between correcting this old character and allowing the player to draw a vampire of their choice: "They have enough to fill out the character a little bit in play and roleplay, but they" C it is also a fixed thing that you understand as a claim. I'm interested in how The Chinese Room balances out the established background with multiple Masquerade Clans, particularly with regard to the Bloodlines; Clan Choice Legacy drastically changes gameplay and how other characters react to you. Malkaviana's insane oracles, for example, were completely rewritten throughout the game in the spirit of Fallout's low-IQ gameplay, while Nosferatus' smelly, ugly vampires couldn't get too close to the humans of the panicked streets of
without them. She.
However, I think having a semi-established main character is a bold and exciting proposition. I'm hoping for something like Planescape: Torment's Nameless or the gloriously gruesome origins of Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3 - a dark and eerie past to contend with as you play. After all those years of waiting for Bloodlines 2, due out this fall (more gameplay details are expected in January), it seems almost surprisingly impossibly close. I kind of resigned myself to what a proper post-Bloodlines RPG could bring, but that's still within the realm of possibility after seeing and hearing what the Chinese Room has planned for the project, by god I think , I'm ready to travel again .
