Spider-Man 2 Matches the Length of its Predecessor; Enhanced by PS5 Hardware, Setpieces Promise Grandeur |
Following the recent release of the new trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 during the latest State of Play broadcast, Insomniac Games has unveiled more details about the highly-anticipated sequel. While fans are excited about the expanded playable area, with Queens and Brooklyn now part of the game's rendition of New York City, there have been questions about whether the game's length has also increased.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Insomniac's Senior Creative Director, Bryan Intihar, clarified that the estimated length of Spider-Man 2 will remain similar to that of the first title. According to HowLongToBeat, players can expect approximately 17 hours for the main quest, 25.5 hours for the main quest plus side content, and 34.5 hours for a full completionist run.
Intihar emphasized that they don't set a specific duration for the game but rather focus on their vision and the narrative they want to convey. He explained that while Spider-Man 2 is a larger experience than Miles Morales, it's in line with the scale of the first Spider-Man game. The goal is to create an engaging experience while considering the team's workload.
He added humorously, "It's not a 200-hour game. I would have a lot less hair if it was a 200-hour game."
In the same interview, Intihar discussed their aim to create larger setpieces, particularly in boss battles, which became feasible thanks to the PlayStation 5's rapid loading times.
Insomniac had always planned to develop Spider-Man 2 for the PlayStation 5, leveraging the console's capabilities. Mark Cerny, one of the game's producers, played a crucial role in helping the team understand the potential of the PlayStation 5. This included harnessing the console's SSD for faster swinging and transitioning seamlessly between various in-game environments.
Moreover, Insomniac shared details about the graphics preset modes available in Spider-Man 2. Players can choose from three options: 30 frames per second, 60 frames per second, and 40 frames per second (for those with a 120Hz display with VRR and HDMI 2.1 support). Notably, ray tracing support is now included in all modes, although the quality will differ based on the selected frame rate. Additionally, ray traced reflections have been expanded to include water surfaces and ocean reflections.
Spider-Man 2 is set to swing onto PlayStation 5 on October 20, with a PC version potentially arriving in the coming years, bringing Spidey's adventures to an even wider audience.
