Citadel represents an exciting way into the world of first-person shooter (FPS) adventures, crafted within the immersive realm of Horizon Worlds using the platform's forthcoming creator tools.
Meta has intriguingly classified Citadel as a “rogue-lite action-adventure puzzle platformer FPS,” offering players the choice of a solo experience or cooperative gameplay with a friend.
As of now, third-party Horizon creators have been tasked with constructing entire virtual worlds within VR environments. This involves placing and manipulating basic, colored shapes through tracked controllers and employing a spatial visual scripting system to introduce dynamic functionalities. However, this approach has often resulted in a somewhat rudimentary and simplistic graphical style, which garnered its share of criticism when viewed outside the VR context.
Citadel marks the second game developed using two groundbreaking tools: the ability to import textured 3D assets from desktop PC software and the integration of TypeScript, a widely-used programming language derived from JavaScript.
The initial game produced with these tools was Super Rumble, a six-player free-for-all shooter launched in July. Notably, Super Rumble served as the inaugural Horizon world available in the closed beta for mobile and web platforms.
During the release of Super Rumble, Meta revealed that it had been created by a newly-established in-house game studio known as Ouro Interactive. It was also emphasized that Super Rumble was merely the first in a lineup of "marquee titles" set to grace Horizon in the coming six months, stemming from both Ouro Interactive and handpicked third-party studios.
In an effort to gather more details, we've checked Meta to inquire whether Citadel, too, was developed by Ouro Interactive and if it extends its support to mobile and web platforms.
At present, Meta has not made these innovative creator tools accessible to the broader community and has yet to specify a release date. We anticipate that further information regarding this development may be unveiled during Meta's annual conference, Connect, slated for September 27 this year.
