The Metal Gear Solid series, which catapulted renowned developer Hideo Kojima to fame, recently marked its impressive 25th anniversary. In a commemorative gesture, Kojima took to social media to share intriguing insights into the iconic stealth game, shedding light on the innovative strategies he employed to manage costs during its development.

Kojima reflected on the significance of Metal Gear Solid 1, stating, "MGS1 was a pivotal moment for me." He emphasized that this game not only represented the first major PlayStation title with a global release but also marked a significant shift in production dynamics. Kojima revealed, "Although I had previously conceptualized, written, designed, and directed the game, decisions regarding platforms, budgets, release dates, promotions, staff recruitment, and collaboration with external creators were outside my purview." This lack of authority extended to critical questions like when to launch the game, how to achieve profitability, and the marketing strategy—a stark contrast to Kojima's current level of creative control, where he even crafts his game trailers.

Kojima continued, describing Metal Gear Solid 1 as his maiden solo production effort. He humorously disclosed that, in an attempt to trim the monthly electricity expenses, he had to request that the development team cease working during nighttime hours. This change may also have advertently contributed to a better work-life balance for the team.

These revelations offer a captivating glimpse into Kojima's early career challenges and resourcefulness. Importantly, they juxtapose the recent documentary on Kojima, highlighting his journey in a new light. Meanwhile, Konami, the rights holder for Metal Gear Solid, is celebrating the cherished franchise without Kojima's involvement. They recently unveiled plans for a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake. On the other hand, Kojima is fully engrossed in directing Death Stranding 2, the sequel to his unconventional post-apocalyptic courier-themed game.
