| Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Best Animal Characters, Ranked |
Baldur's Gate 3 boasts a diverse roster of captivating characters, but not all of them are humanoid. Throughout the game, players have the chance to interact with a fascinating array of animals, each offering unique stories and interactions that rival those of their human counterparts.
While any character can engage with these creatures, the experience becomes especially memorable when the 'Speak With Animals' spell is employed, and a bit of 'Animal Handling' proficiency doesn't hurt either.
10. The Addled Frog
Among the intriguing creatures players encounter, The Addled Frog stands out as a rather dark figure. This distressed amphibian resides in either the Sunlit Wetlands or the Putrid Bog, depending on whether an illusion is in effect. While initially aggressive, engaging the frog in conversation unveils a sinister twist. As its name suggests, the frog is completely incoherent, hinting at a past where it might have been a person who struck a perilous deal with Auntie Ethel, reminiscent of classic fairy tales, ultimately transforming into a frog.
9. Bosk The Bear
For those eager to converse with animals, the Druid Grove is a treasure trove of opportunities. Amidst the many critters, Bosk the bear shines as a charming character, found near Volo. While Volo's dialogue is engaging, don't overlook the chance to speak with Bosk. He's a mild-mannered bear with a compelling backstory of a long journey far from home. Unfortunately, Volo only hears savage growls, leaving Bosk lamenting his lack of understanding from the "man with the pen." Engaging with this gentle soul is a rewarding experience.
8. Lyrthindor Rats
In the Gauntlet Of Shar, players encounter perplexing rats harboring a mysterious secret. By following these rodents into their subterranean home, players uncover a rat willing to bargain. This rat discloses that Raphael struck a deal with it, ensuring the imprisonment of his orthon nemesis, Yurgir. According to their arrangement, Yurgir can only gain freedom after eliminating every Shar Justiciar in the temple. Yet, the players soon learn that the last Justiciar, Lyrthindor, has transformed into a swarm of rats to evade Yurgir's pursuit. Conversations with the Lyrthindor rats offer both intrigue and formidable challenges.
7. Courier Pigeons
The courier pigeons in Baldur's Gate provide comical conversations and play a significant role in the 'Find The Missing Letters' side quest, especially the pigeon closest to players when they first enter the courier area. These pigeons humorously consider themselves part of a military organization, with one acting as the general. The witty voice acting and amusing interactions guide players in locating the missing letters.
6. Displacer Beast
Also found within the Gauntlet Of Shar, the displacer beast is unwaveringly loyal to Yurgir the orthon. However, speaking to her reveals a surprising twist - she's infatuated with Yurgir, claiming he saved her and declaring her unwavering devotion. A humorous moment arises when players offer themselves as potential mates. But there's more to this story, as an examination of her food uncovers Yurgir's use of succubic magic to charm her. If players can help the displaced beast regain clarity, she might join them in the fight against Yurgir.
5. Group
Baldur's Gate is home to numerous adorable cats, but Grub stands out as one of the most interactive. Grub, a timid ginger cat, is the companion of Yenna, a young girl searching for her missing mother. Players have the option to invite Yenna and Grub to their camp. While Grub makes for a delightful camp companion, a potential threat looms if Orin the Red, a shapeshifter, gets her hands on the feline.
4. Tara
Another feline entry, Tara, is a magical winged cat known as a tressym. She can be found on the roof of The Open Hand Temple and is quite welcoming to players who approach with care. However, she has a peculiar taste for the courier pigeons mentioned earlier, leading players to persuade her otherwise.
3. Boo
Although players can't meet the infamous miniature giant space hamster, Boo, until act three, his presence leaves an indelible mark. Boo is the loyal animal companion of Minsc, a beloved Baldur's Gate ranger. Their interactions, mainly Minsc interpreting Boo's squeaks, add charm to any adventure. Furthermore, players can summon Boo as a familiar, and he surprisingly excels in combat.
2. Owlbear Cub
In act one, players stumble upon an owlbear cub in a cave with her mother, but their idyllic life together is short-lived. When her mother dies and she gets kidnapped by goblins, players can rescue her and offer their scent to guide her back to camp. While adopting an owlbear cub may seem unwise, her irresistible charm and promise not to consume the player, despite their appetizing scent, make it challenging to say no. Eventually, she matures into a loyal camp ally.
1. Scratch
Finally, Scratch emerges as a standout among animal companions. His poignant backstory echoes that of Skyrim's Meeko. Left alone in the world after his owner's demise, Scratch finds solace with the player. He proves to be a delightful companion, capable of being petted, playing fetch, bringing meaningful items to camp, and even assisting in combat as a familiar.
While many lovable dogs populate the game, Scratch is dubbed 'the best boy in the Realms,' deserving protection from the malevolent kennel master in Baldur's Gate. Among the cast of animal characters, Scratch truly shines.
Baldur's Gate 3 is currently available on PC and PlayStation 5, with an Xbox SeriesX/S version in development.
